Shadows of Our City - Part of IALD : SEA - In Light of Shadows
Shadows of Our City - Part of IALD : SEA - In Light of Shadows
Project Description
Iconic sceneries that can be found in Singapore, Sentosa and Housing Skyline. The challenge for this installation was to make use of nostalgic or daily objects, to portray the specific individual sceneries through light and shadow. Though being a simple installation, with the play of light and shadow, it can create different perspectives. These varying visual effects can be achieved with the layering or overlapping of shadows, depth of field when the object is nearer or further from the light. Thus, shadows projected in relation to the light source will reveal unexpected sceneries. Merlion Cable Car The use of these old country erasers was to signify Singapore’s connection to many countries today. Using this nostalgic object to create cable cars and the Merlion, was to portray and remember that because of our strategic location and naturally deep harbour, we can have what we have on Sentosa Island today. Shophouses HDBs Singapore’s conservational efforts for our old heritage (shophouses) and the new housing (HDBs) today, inspired the use of matchstick boxes and tic tac for this installation. The idea was to create an irony in using these nostalgic matchstick boxes to portray our first world country’s housing skyline and tic tac to create a colourful vibrant city.
