Design Talks & LIT Lighting Design Awards Ceremony

Pp

At the recent LIT Lighting Design Awards 10th Anniversary Ceremony, our Design Director, Annie Eng, had the opportunity to deliver a five minute talk to an international audience of architects, designers and lighting professionals.

Among the projects Annie shared was the Pangolin Trails at Singapore Night Safari , a project that gave us an opportunity to share a perspective shaped by Asia’s climate, culture, architecture, landscape and unique ways of experiencing space with a global community representing 62 countries.

The Singapore Night Safari is particularly unique because of its relationship with Singapore’s tropical climate and nocturnal wildlife, creating a very different set of considerations for lighting design. Here, the environment needs to support both the natural behaviours of nocturnal animals and the experience of visitors.

Rather than simply illuminating the trails, we explored how light could become part of the natural environment. One of the key ideas was to simulate the qualities of natural moonlight and embed subtle lighting within the landscape, creating an environment that encourages nocturnal animal activity while providing just enough visibility for visitors to navigate and observe.

Through this process, we began to rethink what lighting design could be. Rather than treating darkness as the absence of light, we designed with darkness as a material.

Sharing this project on an international stage was particularly meaningful to us. It was a chance not only to present a project, but also to share how our regional context can shape new ways of thinking about light, nature and the built environment.

The Gala Dinner that followed was another memorable part of the evening. Being in the same room with around 200 lighting professionals representing 25 nationalities was a reminder of how diverse and connected the lighting community has become.
