Nature’s Timeless Elegance Illuminated
Pan Pacific Singapore, a renowned luxury hotel nestled in the heart of Marina Bay, sought to rejuvenate its interiors, and elevate its visual identity. The new interior design showcases a concept reminiscent of Park Royal Collection at Marina Bay – a garden in the hotel. The lighting design aimed to accentuate the hotel’s distinctive existing architectural features, alongside the new interior design designed by FDAT architects, includes the hotel’s main public spaces like the lobby, bar, marketplace, and function rooms.
We aimed to craft a range of lighting moods that would transition seamlessly from day to night, adapting to different occasions and creating the desired ambience in each space.
The interior design draws parallel with the Park Royal Collection at Marina Bay – both embracing a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance and nature-inspired elements within the John Portman’s architecture. The foundation of our lighting design was based on an intimate understanding of the interior concept shared by Park Royal Collection at Marina Bay, albeit being different. Both properties exude elegance through integration of nature and wood tones with contemporary aesthetics.
Drawing inspiration from this shared vision, the concept is rooted in creating an atmosphere of refined tranquility, allowing guests to feel like they are in a retreat under lush greenery along a promenade through the interplay of light and shadow. The lighting design concept not only aims to enhance the features the interior architects have envisioned, but also to further enhance the ambience to soften and create the mood for relaxation, unwinding and for functional use.
The challenge of lighting design, like the site conditions of Park Royal Collection at Marina Bay, has a high atrium void where there is limited daylight exposure within the main living room space. With the integration of trees within the interior design, grow lights are used for growth support for the trees.
The architect’s vision of having “daylight” filtering through from the top poses a challenge for us, with many limitations due to existing site conditions and no alteration works being done at possible mounting locations. We found windows of opportunities through some void openings on the upper floor to mount super narrow spotlights to emulate daylight filtering through the skylight/windows – which contributes to the cozy and inviting atmosphere of nature.
Strategic placement of fixtures mimics the sunlight filtering the foliage, creating playful patterns, and enhancing the concept of a garden in the hotel.
Another key consideration that we had was also looking at the areas of scope in totality. We had suggested to the client/hotel to replace the fixtures along the corridors on levels 1 and 2, as the existing fixtures lighting levels would contrast the revamped areas greatly.
Using downlights of different beam angles to create different layering effect, for both general and accent lighting at key areas such as escalator landings and highlighting sculptures. Track spotlights are also used along the walls, and along areas where paintings will be displayed – for flexibility and future adjustments.
The lighting intent within the ocean meeting rooms and ocean ballroom on level 2 utilizes different strategies due to the design despite looking like one another. Due to the curved sloped ceiling, there were not much surface area to mount downlights, therefore track lights are used in these spaces. We faced multiple challenges when brainstorming what could be done – to be able to light the space for functional use, the logic behind the controls in terms of grouping for usage, and to be able to fit the light fixtures within the slots that also includes the services like AC grills and speakers.
With all these affecting the placement of the light fittings, the remaining space available for the position of the fittings was not ideal for light distribution for the ballroom and meeting rooms. After multiple revisions of the reflected ceiling plan and discussions with the main contractor, the spotlights on the track were placed at the optimum positions that could be done, with the main intention of being able to light the spaces for functional use. Uplighters were also used in the ocean ballroom, to create a soft glow on the feature curved sloped ceiling.
